Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)

The Freedom of Information Act gives anyone the right to request records from federal agencies, unless the records are protected by one of the Act's exemptions.

Before you request

Many records are already public. Check the newsroom and the services directory first — what you need may be available without a request.

How to make a request

Describe the records you are looking for as specifically as you can, including dates, names and subjects, and say how you would like to receive them. Send your request through the contact page, choosing the topic "Records".

What happens next

We acknowledge every request and respond within the time the Act sets, usually 20 business days. If we withhold any record, we will tell you which exemption applies and how to appeal.
